Aging in Place through the Eyes of an Occupational Therapist – EnABLE Home Solutions

Aviary Photo_130320417505769870

Originally from New Jersey, by way of Florida, Andrew Sever received his Masters of Science degree in Occupational Therapy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  in 1997.  Since then he has been a staff occupational therapist at Wesley Wood’s Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.  Andrew is also a Certified Aging in Place Specialist.

Andrew started EnABLE Home Solutions because he saw that the typical aging in place specialist approached the client from a “home remodeling” position rather than from a clinical one.  As part of Andrew’s home evaluation, he analyzes how a person interacts with his or her environment when completing a task or activity.

EnABLE Solutions believes that a client’s physical environment is equally important to one’s health.  Adapting the environment to the physical, mental and emotional health of the individual better positions that person to have a healthier life.

For more information about EnABLE Home Solutions contact Andrew at 770-841-9089 or view their web site at www.enablehomesolutions.com.

Cindy Nelson – Active Advocate for Georgia’s Seniors!

Nelson, Cindy correctedAfter a successful 25-year career in information technology, Cindy Nelson felt she needed to make more of a difference in the lives of the people and community around her.  On a whim, she took the LSAT test, and discovered that either law is easy, or she had a natural inclination for it!  Though not looking to go to law school, she was approached by several that wanted to pay her way!

So Cindy quit her job, and went to law school!  She selected Southern Illinois University because both her mother and brother lived there, and she had an opportunity to live close to them after 20 plus years away.  During that time she discovered that the school ran an elder law clinic that provided free legal counsel to seniors across the southern portion of the state.  In getting involved in this clinic, she discovered her passion.  On a Christmas break, Cindy went to hear Miles Hurley speak at a church group.  It was at this presentation that she confirmed her desire to practice elder law.

In addition to her work with Miles Hurley, Cindy also did an internship with the Georgia Long Term Care Ombudsman, Melanie McNeil, working at the capitol advocating for seniors rights.  She continues this work today, representing Co-Age, the Georgia Gerontology Society and the Area Agencies on Aging.  She’s got her work cut out for her, since Georgia has the 4th fastest growing senior population in the country, and Georgia was the second hardest hit state in the country from sequestration, losing nearly 14% of their federal funding.

Advocating for seniors’ rights is Cindy’s passion, and it shows through in every conversation!  To reach Cindy directly, send her an email at GASeniorAdvocate@yaoo.com!
