Living in the Sandwich Generation – Brian Baker Shares His Story!

Aviary Photo_130179683686020549Brian Baker has spent his career in the healthcare community, starting in the early days of home infusion.  Originally from Oklahoma City, Brian spent ten years in home infusion services.  Since then, he has worked in hospice, home healthcare and durable medical equipment.  A number of years ago, Brian left his family in Oklahoma to move to Atlanta.  Ten years ago, Brian’s brother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 42.  For a number of years, she took care of Brian’s brother on her own.  A few years ago Brian approached his mother with the idea of moving to Atlanta so that he could help with his brother’s care.  To his surprise, she agreed.  For the last two and a half, Brian and his family have worked as a team.  At the same time, Brian is taking care of his own children.  Listen in as Brian shares his story with Eugeria! Radio.  To reach Brian directly, send him an email at bbaker2570@gmail.com

Exciting New Advancements In Understanding The Causes and Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease!

Drs. Graham Nash, MD and Raja Dhaliwal, MD discuss their continuing research at NeuroStudies.Net. Both doctors express their pleasure with the positive direction that these clinical trials are advancing, especially those related to Alzheimer’s Disease. Their studies seem to indicate that with new diagnostic techniques, better more accurate treatments are on the horizon.

NueroStudies.Net developed from Dr Nash’s private practice of neurology, and is dedicated to improve the treatments options for neurological disorders. Their research trials include the disorders of:

  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Dementia
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Acute Stroke
  • Diabetic Neuropathy
  • Vascular Dementia
  • Migraine

Dr. Nash also discusses his foundation, NeuroScience Foundation. This foundation is unique in the clinical trials, research and development of the treatment options here on the local level. “We do not seek to find medications that are already available; we are looking to find new treatments to improve our patients’ illness and lives. We want to reverse the devastating effects of diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Stroke. We will do this by supporting the highest quality research right in our local communities. The patients are you, your friends, neighbors and family.”

For this exciting research to continue NueroStudies.Net is seeking qualified candidates to participate in their clinical research trials. “When you or your loved ones participate in our neurological research programs, you could be taking a critical step towards finding a solution to some of the most common diseases in neurology. The sacrifices made today by you or your loved ones can benefit the future of the medical community for years to come”

Reducing Hospital Readmissions – Part 2

Every person that has ever spent a day as an in-patient in a hospital has experienced a care transition.  And every person that has stayed in a hospital in the last several years has seen changes in the way in-patient stays and discharges are handled.  One in six of Medicare beneficiaries discharge from a hospital were readmitted within thirty days during 2009.  More than 1/3 were readmitted within 90 days.  In 2009 alone, the cost to taxpayers for unplanned re-admissions was more than $19 billion!

The good news is that these unplanned re-admissions can be drastically reduced by observing some fairly simple guidelines for post-discharge care.  Join Sam and Brad as they discuss the details of Griswold Home Care’s approach to Care Transitions, and explore what other organizations are doing to help keep discharged patients safe and healthy in their own homes.  This particular session describes in more detail the steps Griswold Home Care is taking to help reduce re-admissions, including specific recommendations for each of the four diagnoses:  Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

For more information about care transitions, please contact Sam or Brad at (770) 908-0707, or send and email to brad@gscatlanta.com, or sam@gscatlanta.com.

Capturing the Memories of a Lifetime…with Dave Savage

“The quest to know who we are, where we came from, and how we came to be the family we are now, is a powerful emotional desire, at some point in everyone’s life.”

Dave Savage grew up in southern California in a family that is all about legacy. His Dad has composed a 100 year journal of their family and passed that on to Dave.  The owner of Memory Keepers Video and co-author, with Beverly Molander, of the soon to be released book, “The Best Memorial Services”, Dave has always had a curiosity about how things worked and who people are.He began to help friends record the stories of their families, and the business “just grew from there”.“Family storytelling energizes and uplifts the spirit, honors the past and pays tribute to the people who have shaped your life”.“By recording the stories, with your loved ones, you are more confident that they understand what you are sharing and that they comprehend the emotion you have about the subjects being discussed”.

Memory Keepers Video can accomplish this in several customized formats suited to the particular desires of the client and their family.  It was an easy transition from preserving family legacies to writing “The Best Memorial Services”.He and Beverly have found a way that “makes it far easier and less traumatic for your family to create and agree upon a wonder service or ceremony for your loved one”.They share advice, ideas, experiences and resources to help you create a meaningful service or ceremony.  As an example, Dan tells us to think about your family’s traditions, rituals and ceremonies and find a way to record them so you can pass them on to the future generations.  To contact Dave, call him at (404) 323-8686, send him an email at Dave@davesavage.com, or visit these websites:

The Importance of Safety! First Response Safety Training

Tom Enser has seen a lot of ugly things in his career!  As the owner of a company that teaches safety training, he is often called on by friends and acquaintances when an emergency occurs.  Tom tells of one particular occasion where he was called over by a neighbor.  A person had fallen and was on the floor with an obvious head injury, with lots of blood on the floor.  Tom’s first question was, “Has anyone called 911?”  The answer, “No, we called you!”  Seems like common sense to call 911 first, doesn’t it?  In emergencies, common sense often takes a back seat to panic.

First Response Safety Training is committed to high quality, affordable training for both healthcare professionals and family caregivers that seeks to encourage the right response in an emergency as second nature.  Tom and his wife have owned First Response Safety Training for 13 years.  They offer certification courses in CPR, First Aid, AED, Fire Safety and Bloodborne Pathogens.  First Response Safety Training and Griswold Home Care will be partnering to offer CPR and First Aid classes in the Tucker area on a regular basis.  These classes will be open to both healthcare professionals and family caregivers!  To reach Tom, call him at (770) 945-6837, or visit their website here:  www.firstresponsecpr.com.

“You’re the only one that’s not afraid to touch me!” – Hospice Volunteers Making a Difference!

Nancy Sears is a wife, mother, business person and angel.  She learned the power of the human touch more than thirty years ago when she was caring for a friend dying of AIDS.  Since then, she has spent a lifetime giving her time away to those in need of a compassionate touch.  Much of Nancy’s volunteering today is done through Compassionate Care Hospice.

Joining Nancy on the show today, Dave Savage is passionate about helping families communicate and memorialize their stories for future generations.  Like Nancy, Dave is a volunteer with Compassionate Care Hospice.  After spending many years in business, Dave became very interested in helping families “record their roots.”  Check out his work at www.memorykeepersvideo.com.

Michael Mullink has also dedicated his life and career to helping people.  Trained as a minister and chaplain, Michael spent most of the last six years as a chaplain for Compassionate Care Hospice.  He recently took on the role of Director of Volunteer Services.  Now he gets to coordinate the services of his “11th hour angels.”  He notes that Compassionate Care Hospice has nearly as many volunteers as it does paid employees.  He is thrilled to be involved with such a selfless and committed group of individuals!  For more information about Compassionate Care Hospice, or to contact any one of our guests today, email Michael at mmullink@cch.net, or call M inhale directly at (770) 220-2723.
