Aberdeen Place Hospice – A Caring Place where “everybody knows your name”!

Aberdeen Place HospiceAberdeen Place is the neighborhood where Jim, Mark, and Jo Sturm grew up.  A safe place where children grew and learned from their experiences and families thrived.  It was a place where neighbors took care of each other, always ready to support and help those in need.  Aberdeen Place Hospice is founded on that same principle: To be a good neighbor, supporting and helping those that are in their end-of-life journey.

Listen to Jim Sturm, CEO, and Denise Lukow, RN Administrator speak about what sets Aberdeen Place Hospice apart and how the Sturm’s childhood experiences have shaped the foundational principles on which their company is built.

The Sturm’s grew up in a quintessential Midwestern neighborhood where life was good and neighbors were neighborly.  Jim Sturm attended St Louis University and obtained his master degree from Georgia State.  Form there he spent a number of years in medical equipment sales.  Denise was also reared in the Midwest and attended the University of Nebraska, and received her nursing degree from State College of Florida in Bradenton.  Denise has over 30 years experience in the neo-natal and elder care arenas.

After experiencing hospice care for one of their family members, the Sturms’ decided to open a hospice that modeled the caring neighborhood where they grew up.  Aberdeen Place Hospice opened in January 2014.  Denise believes that exceptional hospice organizations are filled with “chameleon”…. people that properly evaluate the case, act independently and reflect the characteristics that make each case unique.  Listen as Jim and Denise describe what they believe hospice is … a place of compassion and hope.

Alzheimer’s Relief ~ Giving Caretakers a Break! Gary Kitchen, Founder – Laona M. Kitchen Foundation

Aviary Photo_130500362124405152Gary Kitchen wants to give family caregivers a break!  Seriously!  Born in Pennsylvania, and growing up in Louisville, Kentucky, Gary attended the University of Louisville on a Navy scholarship.  After college, he was the Communications Officer on a Destroyer, and then the Executive Officer on a Minesweeper.  After all that excitement, Gary decided to settle down a bit and took a job with Kroger.  Though only with Kroger for about ten years, Gary spent the rest of his career in and around the grocery business.

Gary moved to Atlanta in 1972, About eight years ago, his mother moved from Pennsylvania down to Atlanta.  Having Alzheimer’s, she came down to live with Gary.  After about three years, he found he could no longer adequately care for her, so he moved her to an assisted living community.  Wanting to help out, Gary started holding a charity golf tournament to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.  After his mother passed, he decided to take the momentum he had gained with the golf tournament, and create a non-profit foundation, honoring his mother, and providing assistance to family caregivers coping with a loved one with Alzheimer’s.  About a year ago, Gary retired from his “paying job” to run this organization, “The Laona M. Kitchen Foundation.”  This organization is staffed entirely with volunteers, and exists exclusively to fund respite for families that need a break from caring for their loved one.  To find out more about the Laona M. Kitchen Foundation, or to apply for a break, check out their website at www.lmkfoundation.org, or call Gary at 404-428-1267.

I Wish You a Long and Happy Life – How Are You Going To Pay For It? Wally Kelleman on Eugeria! Radio

Aviary Photo_130494956833775146N. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community.  A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law.  After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm.  As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection.  But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.”  She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?”  Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369.  Visit her website at www.kellemanlaw.com.

Clearing the Air on Hypnotherapy – How Alton Reynolds is improving the lives of Atlanta’s Seniors!

Aviary Photo_130481802255899970Return guest Alton Reynolds wears a multitude of hats!  He has been serving in the “helping professions” both on the clinical and business side of healthcare for nearly 40 years.  A native of New York’s Finger Lakes district, Alton started his career providing psychiatric assessments of Navy and Marine personnel returning from Viet Nam.  He went on to ear his Masters Degree in the Psychology of Learning from Temple University.  Nearly thirty years ago, Alton’s wife, Essy, founded the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody.  While Alton has assisted in providing services in and through Essy’s business for many years, Alton has recently taken his passion for helping people through counseling and hypnotherapy on a more full time basis.

Originally rooted in historical Trasactional Analysis research, Alton counsels his patients to evaluate and address three natural human states:  The parent – focusing on self-nurturance rather than self-criticism, The adult – working on cognitive skills and decision-making, and the child – focusing on joy, happiness, creativity and spontaneity.  Alton acknowledges that hypnotherapy can only be effective is a person wants to change and improve.  It is not mind control or manipulation, but rather a gentle encouragement through the use of relaxation techniques that facilitate identification and change of troublesome behaviors.  Alton notes, “whatever you think about most is generally what you will experience in life”, making it essential to think productive and positive thoughts.

For more information on the Hypnosis Center of Dunwoody, visit them on the web at www.hypnosisdunwoody.com, or call them at (770) 390-0444.  To reach Alton directly, call him on his mobile phone at (404) 932-2755.
