It’s Never Too Late to Communicate – June is National Aphasia Awareness Month

Aphasia seems to be one of those conditions that is not widely recognized unless it is something that a loved one is facing.  June is National Aphasia Awareness Month, and Eugeria! Radio wanted to highlight this condition, and introduce you to some experts that can provide both education and assistance for a loved one suffering from Aphasia.

Joining us on the show today is repeat guest, Prasant Desai, Founder and President of Ability Rehab.  Prasant earned a business degree at Southern Miss, then went on to earn his Masters in Public Health.  When he moved to Atlanta about 4 years ago, he conceived of the idea for Ability Rehab, and now offers a full range of outpatient services, including Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapies.  They also provide on-site treatment fo both Assisted Living Communities and Adult Day Care Centers.

Joining Prasant on the show today is his Manager of Speech Pathology, Heidi Lipman.  Heidi started her education at the University of Georgia, earning an undergraduate degree in Communications.  At her father’s urging, Heidi went on to Georgia State University, earning her Masters in Speeh Pathology.  In addition to her work with Ability Rehab, Heidi is also the Founder and President of Brain Masters.  Brain Masters brings a preventative component to cognitive decline.  According to Heide, one is never too old for new learning or brain fitness.  Check out her website at www.brain-masters.com.

The Power of Familiarity – Life Transition Expert, Robyn Bartlett!

Bartlett, RobynA rare native Atlantan (Lakewood Heights), Robyn Bartlett has had a lifelong love of learning. Even after raising three children and engaging in a rewarding career, Robyn is still a student, now working completing a doctoral program at Capella University. Working as a Marketing Director with a local Assisted Living Community, Robyn was baffled at her new residents’ reaction to move-in day. Though these new residents seemed to be accepting, even excited, about the new arrangement, moving day was often rocky. In fact, she noticed that on move-in day, the other residents of the community would go to their rooms and shut the door!

Robyn tells us that some residents refused to get of their cars, and one woman even tried to jump out of her daughter’s car on the way to the community! It became obvious to Robyn that move-in day was filled with fear and trepidation for both residents and their families. Not being equipped to deal with this phenomenon, Robyn went back to school and ended up writing her Master’s Thesis on Social Role Theory, Identity, Belief Systems and the Power of Familiarity. This work led her to develop a comprehensive Transition Program that was implemented in a new Assisted Living Community, and it worked – 100% of the time!

Though she founded Life Transition Experts back in 1999, since January of this year, she has been doing this work full time. Listen in on tips for a successful transition, and join her Transition Tips Webinar being held on June 28, from 9am to 12pm. To register, call Robyn at 404-422-7234, or go to her website at www.lifetransitionexperts.com.

Do You Know What Grief Looks Like? Anne Keeton, Grief to Relief, Provides Unique Insight

Keeton, Anne 2Return guest, Anne Keeton, Founder and President of Grief to Relief, defines grief as “conflicting feelings about a change or end to a familiar pattern or behavior”. While we commonly think about grief in relation to a death, catastrophic injury or illness, grief can surprise us in many more mundane circumstances, like a child going to college, a move, or a change in health status. Sometimes the change can be a good change, but creates mixed emotions in an individual. This is a form of grief!

Handling grief is like having a flat tire. It doesn’t fix itself. There are certain key steps that need to be taken in order to repair the damage. And no one is immune. It will happen to you! And often, loss breeds more loss – “when it rains, it pours”! Listen in as Anne provides some advice about developing a Grief Recovery skill set.

For more information about Grief to Relief, contact Anne at (678) 653-5513, or email her at Anne@GriefToRelief.com. Note that Anne has a new Grief Recovery group class starting on June 23. It will be held in her office in Peachtree Corners.
