Keeping Seniors on their Feet – Prasant Desai and Chris Burds of Ability Rehab

Ability Rehab compressedDid you know that 70% of people over the age of 65 will fall?  Additionally, within the next ten years, the number of broken hips will exceed the number of surgeons to fix them?  Startling, huh!  Prasant Desai and Chris Burd are committed to helping reduce the number of surgeries required by keeping seniors on their feet!  After many years of experience in the healthcare industry, both these men decided to come together to create Ability Rehab.

Ability Rehab LLC focuses on outpatient services providing Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy.  Uniquely, Ability Rehab brings the care to the client – in independent and assisted living communities.  Furthermore, their program is unique in that it isn’t reactive, it’s preventative!  Ability will start part establishing a baseline from clinically observable conditions using established scoring tools.  Then they will develop a plan of care to address the clinical deficiencies.

The best way to get more information is to meet the principals of Ability Rehab face to face.  A perfect opportunity to do this is at their Grand Opening event next Wednesday, October 30 from 11:30am to 2PM.  Their new offices are at 1835 Savoy Dr., Suite 100, Atlanta, GA  30341.  Call to RSVP at (678-298-9484).  Check out their website at www.ability-rehab.com.

The Ten Step Plan for Effective Senior Caregiving Today – Clarice Dowdle on Eugeria! Radio!

Dowdle, ClariceClarice Dowdle is quite a lady; Founder and COO of Senior Caregiving Today, author, nationally recognized public speaker, event promoter, she’s one of those people that never seems to run out of time.  Originally from Michigan, Clarice has, in some shape or form, been involved in the senior arena for over 40 years.  It began with helping care for her aging grandparents and evolved to her parents, in-laws and eventually the community.  With all of this personal and professional experience it’s only natural that she became an advocate for those that she has devoted so much of her life to.

“I am going to be your number one senior care-giving authority. Together we will combat the issues that plague us with our seniors today, so that one day our children’s generation will have the guidebook in place they will need to assist us as we age.”

Listen as Clarice Dowdle speaks about Senior Caregiving Today, her book The Ten Step Plan for Effective Senior Caregiving Today, and the upcoming Georgia USAging Conference on October 25th.

A Commitment to Spacious, Engaging and Affordable Living Options for Seniors – Doug Baker of Coventry Place

Baker, Doug

Doug Baker is originally for  New Orleans. Looking at his career you would not have expected him to land in the senior services industry. He started his career in law enforcement with the sheriff’s department wth Harry Lee in Jefferson Parish.  He wenton to become a special agent, working with the DEA and ATF. At the age of 30, Doug decided that he was tired of getting shot at, and wanted to do something more meaningful.  So Doug net back to school and earned his MDiv degree from Coventry seminary.  He’s been a pastor, a missionary and a Christian radio show host.  Needless to say, we didn’t have to encourage him to talk!

Thirteen years ago, Doug’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.  I t was a t this point that Doug redirected his career to work with seniors, and has been doing it ever since.  Today, Doug is the Executive Director of Coventry Place, a 127 unit community of independent living apartments and personal care apartments.  Coventry Place was conceived and constructed by a group that included Arthur Blank and Bernie Marcus to provide spacious, safe and affordable housing for seniors.  Coventry is very proud to note that many of its residents and staff have been there for more than 20 years.  In fact, their oldest resident is 106, and has been living at Coventry since it opened in 1987!

For more information about Coventry Place, stop by for a tour at 2806 N. Decatur Rd. in Decatur, or call Doug at (404) 296-0962.

“Hospice is About Living, Not Dying” – Embracing Hospice

Embracing HospiceBarbara Ferrell has always wanted to help people, even from her earliest memories growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of southwest Virginia.  We’ve seen that in Barbara as long as we’ve known her.  About five years ago, Barbara had an opportunity to take her social work skills to Embracing Hospice.  She tells us she’s home, and never wants to do anything else!  Wow!  Joining Barbara in the studio this morning were two associates.  Kerin Fraunfelder is a Hospice Record Coordinator.  Kerin went to school to be a teacher, but was drawn into hospice before she ever started teaching.  Kerin has a unique relationship to Embracing Hospice, in that her father was the founder of the parent company, American Hospice, and was one of the very early advocated for hospice as a part of the Medicare program in this country. Also joining Barbara is her long time friend and new work associate, Lea Thompson.  Lea has a background in skilled nursing, and has just recently joined Embracing Hospice as Provider Relations Coordinator.  Lea notes that her initial impression of hospice was that it could be a “disturbing” place to work.  After only a few short months, she’s convinced she made the right decision, and resoundingly agrees that hospice is about living!

For more information about Embracing Hospice, call them directly at 404-659-0110, or visit their website at www.americanhospice.com.
