Paul Walker, Pam Sheridan and Stefani Baskam chat with Eugeria! Radio

Walker, Paul croppedPaul Walker is Vice President and General Manager, Georgia for Universal American.  Universal American offers a number of Medicare supplemental insurance products.  Medicare Annual Enrollment began on November 15, and closes on December 31.  With all the confusion regarding healthcare reform and the various plans offered by different companies, Paul offers some valuable tips to seniors to navigate the complex array of Medicare supplemental options.  Listeners can reach Universal American at 1-866-561-4405, or via the internet at www.universal-american-medicare.com.

Sheridan, Pam croppedOur second guest, Pam Sheridan, came to serve seniors via an unconventional route.  Growing up an “army brat”, Pam came to Atlanta to work in interior design.  Originally becoming involved in hospice as a volunteer, she developed a passion for the work, and eventually took a position as Community Liaison for Compassionate Hospice of Northeast Georgia.  In addition to bringing a natural energy and exuberance to encourage her patients and their families, she hopes to soon bring her therapy dog, Justice!  Pam can be reached at 678-651-1440. Visit Compassionate’s website at www.chcmg.com.

Baskam, Stefani croppedStefani Baskam is also relatively new to the Senior Care industry.  Mother of three girls, she started considering returning to the workplace as her girls started to go off to college.  After confirming her gifts for service and hospitality through a spiritual gifts assessment, she began investigating various marketplace options.  A neighbor led her to an opportunity at the new Sunrise Johns Creek Senior Living Community.  Since it’s opening earlier this year, Stefani has served as the Community Relations Director.  To take a tour, stop by the community at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road, or call Stefani at (770) 814-0505.  You can also find Sunrise on the web at www.sunriseseniorliving.com.

Eugeria! interviews Tony Grieco, Lynn Ross, Margie Osheroff and Rose McKeever

Grieco, Tony - cropped Nov 18 2009Tony Grieco  is the Executive Director of Ivy Hall Assisted Living  in Alpharetta.  One of seven children, Tony has always had a crowd around him, so he is in his element at Ivy Hall!  Listen in as he tells us how he made a decision to commit his life and career to serving seniors as a result of an article in Newsweek.  Though Ivy Hall is a beautiful facility, Tony tells us that “the magic is not in the bricks and sticks;  the magic is in the terrific people the make up the staff of Ivy Hall.”  One of the highlights of Ivy Hall is the food, cooked by a former sous chef from Chateau Elan.  Arrange a tour and maybe even a dinner by calling Tony at (770-814-0114).

Ross, Lynn - cropped Nov 18 2009Lynn Ross is a Social Worker at The Emory University School of Medicine.  She specializes in neurological movement disorders.  Though her title is a bit of a mouthful, Lynn’s role is to work with patients and families dealing with Parkinson’s Disease, Huntington’s Disease and other ailments that manifest themselves through a deterioration of the part of the brain responsible for physical movement.  Given the permanent nature of this deterioration, Lynn’s has a critical responsiblity to gently educate and point patients and families to resources that may help them deal with this reality.  To this end, one of Lynn’s extracurricular passions is the American Parkinsons Disease Association (www.apdaparkinson.org), where she serves as the coordinator of the Information and Referral Center.   Lynn can be reached at Emory at (404) 728-6300, or at the APDA at (404) 728-6552.

Osheroff, McKeever - cropped Nov 18 2009Our final guests on today’s show are members of  Dekalb Medical Center’s Cancer Support Team.  With an MA from Tulane University in New Orleans, Margie Osheroff has always had a passion for serving people.  She was particularly drawn to Dekalb Medical Center because of the unique, holistic approach taken to patient care – dealing with patients and families, addressing emotional, social, financial and spiritual needs in addition to the physical needs of the patient.  Margie has taken this approach a step further by joining hands with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Troutman Sanders law firm to provide patients and their families with free critical legal assistance for items such as Power of Attorney and Living Wills.

Rose McKeever has been with the Cancer Support Team since its inception 19 years ago.  In fact, she has been with Dekalb Medical Center for 31 years!  Like Margie, Rose loves the holistic approach taken by Dekalb Medical Center.  She obviously loves her job, as evidenced by her tenure there.  Part of Rose’s responsibility is to coordinate a number of cancer support groups.  One in particular that is near to Rose’s heart is the Tree House Gang.  This is a support group for the children of cancer patients, and focuses on helping children adjust to the idea and reality of having a parent that is diagnosed with cancer.  Rose and Margie can be reached at Dekalb Medical Center at (404) 501-5701.

A conversation with John Bishop, Patsy Golden, Melissa Mulhall and Sarah Biehl

John  Bishop, Executive Director of Crossroads Hospice led off today’s show.  John is an Atlanta native with a background in mental health counseling.  In addition to a degree from Ohio State University, John is also a Registered Nurse.  Though he loves his job as executive director, he misses taking his pet parrot out to spend time directly with patients.  John has a passion for helping people that goes well beyond his day to day job responsibilities.  He, and Crossroads Hospice, work closely with the Alzheimer’s and ALS Associations, and John is a board member with Friends of Gwinnett Senior Services (www.fogcss.com).  John can be reached via email at psychranger@yahoo.com, or on his cell phone, which he bravely recited during our interview (you’ll have to listen to get it, though)!  www.crossroadshospice.com

Jennifer and Melissa, Plantation South Duluth

Finally, we spoke to the “dynamic duo” from Plantation South in DuluthMelissa Mulhall is the Director of Community Relations, and Sarah Biehl is the Activities Director, or in her own words, the “Director of Excitement”.  Melissa and Sarah shared their joys in working with residents and families of residents every day.  They seem surprised that they would actually get paid to go in to work and have so much fun!  (Management take note!)  Both women are committed to enhancing the lives of seniors through both their vocation and their volunteer activities.  Interestingly, both Melissa and Sarah came to Plantation South as a result of volunteer activities.  When they are not working or spending time with family, they both support the local Alzheimer’s chapter, and just recently walked in the Alzheimer’s Memory Walk, helping to raise more than $60,000 through the Duluth chapter.  Meliss and Sarah can be reached at Plantation South at (770) 623-0617.  Stop in to visit, or check out their website at www.plantationsouth-duluth.com.

Adrienne Noble, Information and Referral SpecialistFinally, Eugeria! spoke to Adrienne Noble, Information and Referral Specialist for Gwinnett County Senior Services.  Originally from New York, Adrienne has become a vital force in her community by immersing herself in opportunities to serve the area’s seniors.  From directing residents to County service locations, to assisting them in availing themselves of Gwinnett County’s senior services, to helping families think through the impact of an aging loved one that can no longer stay safe alone, Adrienne’s role is to provide answers!  One of Adrienne’s pieces of advice to those facing the aging issues is, “Speak up, let your voice be heard, let your needs be known.”  There are many avenues of assistance available if you simply ask!  Adrienne can be reached at (678) 377-4150, or via email at adrienne.noble@gwinnettcounty.com.  Find about more about the services available to seniors through Gwinnett County at their website: www.gwinnettcounty.com
